Joseph J. Schermack, Sr. married Amelia Schauer in Freeport, Illinois, USA June 20, 1875. He was a tailor and was part of the town delegation that greeted Theodore Roosevelt in 1903 when he dedicated the monument to the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas Debates held in Freeport.
